apple comes amid a new outbreak of violence in syria two powerful explosions have rocked a military academy in the capital damascus a rebel groups have claimed responsibility saying they are retaliating to military operations in the city a middle east correspondent is keeping across developments. well interesting morning there were two explosive devices that were planted in the martyr's son's school a military school in the syrian capital of damascus now from the information we have the devices were planted in two separate areas they rushed to causing fire to those parts of the building it's not yet clear the exact number of casualties we certainly hearing that a number of people have been injured the early reports that scores of people have been injured and killed we know that fire did erupt in two separate parts of the building and also early reports of an explosion near the airport it is believed that the attack was carried out because it was suspected that there were intelligence officers or security officers inside the building now to rebel groups
11:06 am
have come forward to take responsibility for this attack the one is the revolutionary council in damascus that has links with al qaida it is a group that is seeking the overthrow of the syrian president bashar assad a group that is also against dialogue and in a statement that it issued it's said that this attack was in response to the syrian army's operations in the syrian capital now for months there have been fighting between the syrian troops as well as opposition forces in the capital city of damascus as well as in the country's second largest city of aleppo the fighting has continued since last year march with the daily casualty count continuing to climb out his policy right there well amity towards iran is seeping onto the streets of the big apple as we reported just a few minutes here on r.t. i don't see jihad appear in the new york subway or search for the thin line between free speech and the hate speech. this is our tune our

japan swapped words for action in its territorial dispute with china and taiwan after using water cannons to repel the approaching taipei vessels in contested waters a large flotilla of fishing boats backed by eight coast guard ships were forced to retreat from a region of tokyo considers its own party's tabatha takes us through the efforts. the dispute between japan and china over the islands in the east china sea has now expanded to include taiwan it all began when the taiwanese flotilla of fishing boats escorted by coast guard vessels set off to try and reinforce their claim to the islands however meant when they met with japanese coast guard vessels something of a giant water fight ensued. in the area surrounding the disputed islands the japanese coast guard vessels used their water cannon on the taiwanese fishing boats

the thai were nice coast guard vessels then turned their water cannon on the japanese ships a few hours after it all started the taiwanese vessels withdrew but all of this was watched by nearby chinese vessels that were waiting outside of the disputed waters the islands themselves are a small group of unpopulated rocky outcrops attention really began after it was thought that there may be large mineral resources in the surrounding waters japan has been holding meetings with china to try and calm that is spewed this latest tension began after japan bought the islands from a private owner and nationalize them that caused huge protests in a number of chinese cities china has made it clear that that japan should be under no illusion in the dispute and that it will accept no infringement it says of what it considers its territorial integrity taiwan japan and china all claim the

income chart it looks like you don't have much to look forward to financially. describes an economic recovery that may leave many behind. britain's in the midst of a double dip recession and everybody feeling the pinch or are they telling me research has revealed that the gap between britain's rich and poor is widening in fact if you're one of the middle income or low income families in the way to tighten your belt even further it's still there by twenty twenty an average low income family could see their net income full by as much as fifteen percent i think is really worrying for low income households because it shows that we don't just have a growth problem if you like in the u.k. it shows that even once growth goes kick in households across the bottom half are going to be poor in twenty twenty than they were in twenty's are now also learning about this latest research is that it's based on a very generous assumptions about the future growth in britain now what that means
11:17 am
is that even if person manages to repeat wait and see get this these to the economy start slowly dragging its way out of this recession the not everybody is going to benefit and the ones who are going to be hardest hit going to be those middle income and low income families now in an age of austerity britain's government's been accused of waging war on britain's poor chancellor george osborne wants to cut a further ten billion from the welfare budget again having that knock on effect to the middle income low income families who need the support the most. already course want to surf earth reporting right now see a drone attacks in pakistan are having a devastating impact on civilians this according to a new american study the report suggests the attacks claim to be surgically precise do little to improve us security instead because a large number of civilian casualties and drum up anti american sentiment among the affected population let's get more on this now and talk to cal grayson and i'm t.

jones activist and oscar nominated film producer joining us live from london a pleasure to have you on the program today thanks very much indeed i must ask you about when it comes to the pressure going on to washington when it comes to the issue of public pressure how much and what will it take to get washington to change the way it uses drone strikes or can it be persuaded at all. i think it needs pressure from all sides it needs pressure from within america from activists there in needs pressure from pakistan for example there are mixed messages at the moment and even with regard to pakistan because publicly they saying that they're against the drone strikes and we don't see them doing anything for example like taking legal action which they could and which in fact drone victims are actually doing they are taking legal action so i think this is the kind of thing that needs to happen at the moment where you talk you talk about the issue of a mixed message a word let's talk about why is there such a large discrepancy between the official casualty figures and those compiled from
11:19 am
sources on the ground. well and civilians are classed as earth and a lot of the time i think that there's no indication as to who is actually being killed and a fully agree with iran current who said recently to america name your victims identify all the victims of drone strikes and then we can actually see who you are killing but what about on the issue of a cia what i understand of the actual drone campaign is managed by the cia and not so much the military how do you think that influences of the drone strikes program . well i think it's very secretive and it's very difficult to get information and i want to give you one example that i'm trying to get information on at the moment my colleague celine shahzad was kidnapped and tortured to death last year now he didn't huge an insurgent and he disappeared and four days after he was killed
11:20 am
this particular insurgent was located and he was killed by a drone strike now in the investigation in pakistan one of the questions was raised was well in it was these journalists sacrificed so that and the americans could could get to target an insurgent now how do we ask questions on this because you know i mean i mean a bomber is you know until recently was denying that drone strikes were even happening when i suddenly got a lot of issues in the united states that if you question the war on terror or if you question a military engagement overseas that perhaps you're not a patriot and you don't support your own country there's a lot of emphasis put on that certainly in the u.s. media and i reckon when it comes to this u.s. report claims the american security is compromised by the drone strike campaign and not strengthened but officials in washington praise the accuracy of the strikes and the number of militants killed do tell us who is right in this case well i think. you have to listen to you know to all different sides and come to your own
11:21 am
conclusion but a colleague of mine and a journalist gareth porter recently went through a lot of the figures the along with the bureau of investigative journalism and they were able to identify from their own sources a lot more civilian victims but it's not in the interests of the u.s. to identify civilian victims because by killing civilians they're going against a lot of their own legislation and and when they are killing insurgents you know these are alleged insurgents and you know it's basically innocent until proven guilty you know a lot of these people and haven't been to court and i mean for example if i was just a. by ridge are all over it over the white house and for the fact that the american state killed my husband and brother in law which they actually did. get away with it i don't think so but there are some analysts are there some analysts who say that when it comes to the invasion of afghanistan that are the u.s. essentially missed the boat but going after al qaeda and the taliban these groups are essentially went over the pakistan border into pakistan do you think or do you
11:22 am
think the u.s. is in a quagmire in the wrong area should the u.s. be more in pakistan than afghanistan i think it actually needs a whole rethink of strategy and i actually think the u.s. and a lot of the people back me up on this need to actually take a back step and let pakistan deal with its all issues within its own territory and stop trying to create more problems because the drone strikes are just creating you know more radicalized young people in the tribal areas we're hearing as well carol gross and he drone activist and for make i live in london thank you for coming on the program thank you. by the american made anti muslim film of the protests that followed it oh galvanizing culture warriors on both sides of the atlantic and that space in new york has become the latest battlefield artes and i see chuck and i is in the big apple to gauge the local reaction. these ads calling for the defeat of jihad are being put up in tents some way stations in new york mr costin with more

than six thousand dollars that come from a group that's accused of sparking hate by critics but has been given the green light by new york authorities only going up this monday the ads are already causing much debate are they too offensive to the muslim community or does freedom of speech conquer all let's find out what new yorkers have to say about this i'm shocked that that mayor bloomberg and his people are allowing it's just going to lead on to more and saw it and tell you everything it's a good idea to have anti islamic sentiment for some reason absolutely not but just perpetuates anti people sentiment controversial of course it's controversial is poisonous in the new york city subway system you know this is a city that's been wracked by a trauma for years and years and here we are after eleven years of war still using the language of war these ads are going up in new york subway stations today but what do you think about this. while i support israel for the safety and peace and
11:24 am
security of israel i'm not for hate speech but at the same time we have a first amendment is there really a very fine line between freedom of speech and offending someone there is this freedom of speech there's also freedom of religion so you have to walk a fine line should be inside muslim but people still should be aware what they're doing the anti muslim ads are popping up at a time when protests continue raging in the middle east over film depicting the prophet mohammad so should new york officials have considered not just the substance but also the timing of this campaign they ought to be less this caution and just let the thing that i add as a time because they they are you know they hate us over there whenever you start speaking against religion especially when tensions are globally the way that they are yeah i think there definitely be some consequences well i could see how could my things complicated. where they would have an effect on the u.s. i'm not sure but you could use this as something against the u.s. do you think this could have a more dangerous consequence. really for the latest sure the anti islam ads be
